Lying over adultery is legal in Italy

Italy's highest appeal court has ruled that married Italian women who commit adultery are entitled to lie about it to protect their honour.

The court gave its landmark ruling after hearing the case of a 48-year-old woman, convicted of giving false testimony to police by denying she had lent her mobile phone to her lover.
The appeal court did not agree that she had broken the law.

It said bending the truth was justified to conceal extra-marital relationships. In a predominantly Catholic country you might expect the courts to take a dim view of lying and adultery.
But not in this case.

The woman who brought the appeal was from Porto Ercole on the Tuscany coast, and named only as Carla. She had lent her telephone to her secret lover, Giovanni, who then used it to call Carla's estranged husband, Vincenzo, and insult him.

Giovanni, the lover, was convicted of abusive behaviour in a local court, and Carla convicted as an accessory.

Controversial judgements

But the Court of Cassation found that having a lover was a circumstance that damaged the honour of the person among family and friends. Lying about it, therefore, was permitted, even in a judicial investigation.

It is not yet clear whether the ruling might also apply to men who have secret mistresses.
The Court of Cassation, which is largely staffed by elderly male appeal judges, has in the past issued a number of controversial judgements.

It once gave a ruling, later rescinded after protests from women's groups, that a woman could not be raped by definition if she was wearing tight jeans, since the jeans could only be removed with her consent.

Thou Shalt What?

From Chaz at The Teapot:

The Bible...
  • Permits polygamy [Leviticus 18:18]
  • Prohibits sexual intercourse when a woman has her period, under penalty of exile [Leviticus 20:18]
  • Sanctions selling your daughter into slavery [Exodus 21:7]
  • Bans tattoos [Leviticus 19:28]
  • Prohibits eating rare meat [Leviticus 7:24]
  • Bans wearing clothes that are made from a blend of textiles, under penalty of death [Leviticus 19:19]
  • Prohibits cross-breeding livestock, under penalty of death [Leviticus 19:19]
  • Bans sowing a field with mixed seed, under penalty of death [Leviticus 19:19]
  • Prohibits eating pigs, rabbits, or some forms of seafood [Leviticus 11:10]
  • Requires Saturday to be reserved as the Sabbath, under penalty of death [Leviticus 24:8]
  • States that you may not approach the altar of God if you have a defect in your sight [Lev 21:20]

And last, but by no means least, prohibits the touching of the skin of a dead pig [Leviticus 11:8] which makes the football game in question, unless all the players are wearing gloves, a direct act against God and the Bible. Clearly, a lot of laws and directives in the bible have had to yield to the evolution of society and civilization.

God the Drama Queen

Found this in a forum today, I'm running out of my own material now, so I'm hunting and gathering:

Parting the Red Sea and then dramatically drowning the Egyptian army, making people wander for forty years in the Sinai because of a perceived insult, killing Job's children to prove a point even though a limitless being need not prove anything to anyone--and then thinking they could simply be replaced with new children, requiring people to be dunked in water to prove their allegiance, putting in motion an end of the world scenario worthy of a Hollywood Blockbuster...!

Man oh man, Somebody craves attention. And who is that Somebody? Why, it's Miss God, Drama Queen of Heaven. --SNAP!-- What a bitch. She loves us so much that She wants to save us, Her beloved children, from eternal damnation. Golly gosh, isn't she just... like, divine? I mean, there would be no damnation for us to be saved from if She hadn't created it. Isn't it great that because others will burn and serve as a reminder of what could happen to us, we can get our wings and become fairies in a chorus line forever?

Now Miss Thing is a limitless being who could have come up with a limitless number of ways to make us see the Celestial Truth beyond her infinite-inch pumps, but She chose pain and suffering on earth with the threat of more pain and suffering in the great beyond. Miss Thing obviously needs intimidation to teach love. But what does it matter so long as we love? And hey, so what if those we love burn eternally; we're saved, Hallelujah, saved! And the unsaved? It's their own fault. The nerve of them, being born Hindus or living as cavemen before Christianity--or even worse, working so hard to take care of elderly parents, support kids, and get through a dehumanizing job that there is no energy left for Sunday evening Bingo with Father Lucius. If, with all their hearts, they had called on the name of Miss Jesus, that homo-erotic hunk from the S&M oeuvre of Mel Gibson, they would have been saved, Hallelujah.

Mel Gibson and Father Lucius tell us that the wages of sin is death. But who created the idea of sin? Miss God, of course. We wouldn't be sinners if She had not created us in Her image. She created sexuality but doesn't want us to use it properly. A normally horny teen can't even masturbate; he has to wait until after high school, college, and grad school to get married and laid. Miss Thing also gave us bodies that suffer every little thing alongside natures that demand creature comforts, but then She condemns us for not being a flock of Mother Teresas.

Oh wait, Mother Teresa was Catholic. She's going to hell anyway saith the Fundies, Hallelujah. Yes, that's right: All that she did does not matter if she doesn't lick the celestial pumps. And if Hitler calls on the name of Jesus, he goes to Heaven. After all, he sent did us a favor by sending six million heathens to Hell early, Hallelujah. Ah, but it's Miss Satan who makes us do all the bad things. That's the mo-fo who is really responsible for the six million. Well, who the Hell created Miss Satan (pun intended)? Miss Satan is allowed to deceive us, but then we are condemned for being deceived. Miss God gives us rational minds and the ability to think for ourselves--and then She demands we ignore our intellect when it tells us that She is out of her omnipotent mind... Hallelujah!

Born into Sin? No sir, I don't think so

People tell me babies are born into sin and are rebellious by nature. Apparently they have inherent sinful selfish leanings. Well, that's not sin, my friends... that's just a simple thing called survival. Babies don't have the ability to think about other people yet but will to develop into that. At their age they must think about getting fed and that's about it... it's me me me, because they simply can't do it themselves. They depend on the parent. They depend on us to entertain them because they are forming bonds, and again can't entertain themselves. That's not sin... that's far from sin. That's natural growth and healthy dependency.

Sure as they get older they will need to learn how to shake off the self thoughts and share but it is a natural development from survival to co-dependency. Not sin... but I suppose you can call this development sin if you like. The instinct to protect what is our... toys, food, etc... is a natural and healthy one. Again, as we learn and develop, hopefully we learn how important it is to live morally, ethically and friendly with the people around us... (taking on more of the attributes that Jesus preached).

I see the actual value in the kids who touch the stove. Our curiosity and freedom of choice allows us to experience things for ourselves. The kids who touch the stove learn a lesson... They remember well the natural consequences. Their hand heals after a short period of pain and they are wiser for it.

Put the Christian scenario in place... If you touch the stove (and are not saved, as you say) then you are thrown into hell and hurt for a very long time.. even eternally? You will never learn because the punishment will never stop.

God wants to be a father AND he wants to be a Bridegroom. I think he's confused and would be a real bi-atch if you believe he created us born into sin in the first place. I wouldn't trust him with the kids.

If he is so insecure about his relationship with us that he would shoot us down for:

1. breaking up with him because we don't want to huddle together on Sunday mornings, or
2. not getting to know him properly; then he is the sort of partner who shouldn't be running a universe.

Damned if we do, damned if we don't with that sort of an unreasonable entity. I believe that something went down 2000 years ago and that it was done to do away with the laws that we couldn't deal with, and that it was done for ALL! Whatever it was, it was a good thing for us. The writers and interpreters of the bible since then have had their own agendas and, as is the case throughout human history, desire to hold control over others. The whole "we're saved and you're not" mentality that breeds arrogance and pride is not from the god I believe in.

No one's come back and told as what it's like after death... maybe Jesus, but he didn't really give much away about it did he? It always makes me chuckle when people think of the afterlife as it's alluded to in Revelations (an extremely symbolic book), as if there's streets of gold - like such a mineral would be so special to spiritual bodies that still need legs to walk down them in order to get to the mansions that have rooms and en suites.

Sin-side

Do you want to see the demons?
the ones that live within
The devil's in your own flesh
It's what you may call sin
Struggling always conflicted
babes rebel against their kin
whilst growing, we suppress it
but it forever keeps its grin
Evil passes through our lips
boiling underneath our skins
warring always battling on
where light ends, it begins
I am Satan; I am God
battling warring opposing twins
I am normal; I am odd
make choices - who dares wins
